The Discovery Cove team is excited to welcome a new addition to its family! Coral – one of our beloved dolphins who was born at Discovery Cove back in 2000 – recently gave birth to a beautiful, bouncing baby girl on February 7. This is Coral’s second baby and marks the 29th dolphin born at Discovery Cove since the park opened. Go behind-the-scenes with Discovery Cove Trainer Gina McDaniel as she shares more details.
Gina, and the rest of the Discovery Cove Animal Training Team, is closely monitoring the mother and calf 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They’re observing the calf’s behavior, respirations and ensuring that she continues to nurse properly. The calf received a standard neo-natal exam, which includes a routine physical, a week after she was born.
The calf now weighs approximately 44 pounds and is 46 inches long. Here she is above swimming side-by-side with her mom.
Soon, we will host a naming contest where you can help us choose the new baby’s name! In order to participate in our contest, please make sure to like the Discovery Cove Facebook page to stay tuned for more details.
