Discovery Cove in Orlando Teams up with the Nature Conservancy's Adopt a Coral Reef Program

by Staff

Coral reefs not only contribute to the overall beauty of the underwater world, but they are also one of the most dynamically diverse habitats. More than 7,300 species of fish call the Mesoamerican Reef home. These delicate, underwater ecosystems provide food, medicine and inspiration to generations of people as well.

Unfortunately, pollution, excessive fishing and overdevelopment make coral reefs one of the most threatened habitats in the world. It is up to us to preserve these mystifying ecosystems by raising awareness and supporting conservation efforts such as The Nature Conservancy’s Adopt a Coral Reef program.

In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of global marine protection and coral reef conservation, Discovery Cove has been an avid supporter of The Nature Conservancy's Adopt a Coral Reef program. And, in four years, more than $200,000 has been raised to support the rehabilitation of the Mesoamerican Reef.

The Adopt a Coral Reef program supports local conservationists, scientists, fishermen and others to develop a marine reserves network, implement conservation policies and practices, and protect spawning grounds for dozens of endangered reef fish. By adopting a coral reef, you are not only contributing to the preservation of entire ecosystems, but also to the conservation of our remarkable oceans.
