Ishasha is home to the largest elephant population in Uganda, creating a fierce competition for land and resources between humans and elephants. Crop raiding is extremely high and has led to substantial economic losses for local communities and ill will towards elephants.
In order to protect both the elephants and the livelihoods of farmers, the Uganda Conservation Foundation worked with local residents to dig and maintain a trench that extends several miles along the impacted areas; safely cutting off the elephants’ access to the crops. It’s a low cost, effective solution to prevent conflict between humans and elephants living in close proximity.
The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund supported this effort.
