Julie Scardina’s African Journey: Dwindling Lion Populations

by Staff

Lion populations in Africa are dwindling due to habitat loss and conflict with humans. It is estimated there are only 20,000 to 40,000 lions left in the wild in all of Africa. The predatory behavior of lions in Northern Kenya place them in an extremely vulnerable situation as they live in or near areas inhabited by nomadic people.

The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund supports researchers with the Ewaso Lion Project who are investigating the factors affecting the population dynamics of lions in and around local reserves. These reserves have been identified as high-priority areas for biodiversity conservation and research, and are critically important range areas for lions.
